Note: This, my home page, is designed as a shortcut to the most frequently used information (weather, traffic, libraries, the site) faster than finding a bookmark .   The Links Outline organizes my pages of >4000 links I have found useful, with important news that is ignored by most in REF15. My personal Hyde Park corner for editorial pages and MacColin Household pages are also here. Please see the  Intro page for site information. Mouse over my picture changes background. "I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion."
(Thomas Jefferson, Letter to William Charles Jarvis, September 28, 1820)
Be careful about what you swallow. Remember "Bought Manhattan for $24?"
In 1626 Peter Minuit bought Manhattan island from the Canarsie Indians, who dwelt on Long Island, merely trading on Manhattan, for a load of cloth, beads, hatchets, and other odds and ends then worth 60 Dutch guilders. 60 guilders in 1626 would buy you 1-1/2 pounds of silver.
The $24 was a translation in the 19th century, so for more than your lifetime that has been a lie.
"The Free Market is self correcting."
Savings & loans; Junk bonds; Derivitives; Milkin; Prudhoe Bay spill; Exxon Valdez; Alaska pipeline oil spill; Enron; Blackwater; Madhof; Lehman Brothers; BP's Deep Horizon
They all cost us more than they cost the perpetrators.
Welcome Big Brother? If the government is not spying on citizens, why is it helping others do so? CIA execs are on trial, DMV employees are convicted of snooping in star's records, IRS agents caught in taxpayers records, Richard Nixon used the F.B.I. against his "enemys list", and J. Edgar Hoover illegally used the FBI to harras Martin Luther King and others. Pacifist groups are now on the TALON database of terrorist organizations. Do you believe you have privacy? Do you trust all government employees that much? We no longer have the protections of the Bill of Rights:
Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
We now know of the warrentless searches.

Amendment V
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
More than one citizen has been falsely held secretly without trial or indictment for over a year.

Amendment VI
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.
A student was held incommunicado, without trial, for 17 months because the government agents thought the room mate's aircraft radio (a pilot) was his, in spite of being told the truth.

Drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is not for domestic oil supply. Proof?
"The Senate Energy Committee also rejected a proposal from Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon that would have prevented ANWR oil production from being exported to China or other foreign markets."

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. - H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.   - Benjamin Franklin
Patriot Act? NSA?

"Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
    - Hermann Goering, at the Nuremberg trials, 1946
